The performance Jamal is English spoken

 Jamal is boos. Niet op iemand in het bijzonder, maar op iedereen.Op zijn ouders die geen Nederlands spreken. Op zijn school waar hij altijd 'die buitenlander' blijft. Op het Westen en de hele wereldpolitiek. Hij slaat om zich heen, niet met vuisten maar met woorden. Want Jamal leest boeken. Honderden. En hij schrijft gedichten. Woedende en dreigende gedichten. Ze duiken overal op, maar niemand weet dat ze van hem zijn. Het is zijn geheim. Eén van zijn geheimen.

Nu moet Jamal elke middag een half uur praten, anders sturen ze hem van school. Daar zit hij dan, bij een oude vent, die Matthieu heet en die vraagt en vraagt. Waarom wil hij zo graag achter Jamal’s geheimen komen? Waarom laat hij hem niet met rust? En hoe open is Matthieu zelf eigenlijk? Zijn vrouw is dood en nu zit hij zijn tijd uit. Het liefst alleen. Tot hij door Jamal wordt wakker geschud...

Het klaslokaal is de arena waar Jamal en Matthieu tot elkaar veroordeeld zijn. Waar ze elkaar raken met scherpe woorden en stille blikken. Waar de strijd wordt beslist tussen gedichten over liefde en ware liefde. Tussen lessen uit boeken en levenslessen. En tussen jezelf leren kennen en jezelf laten kennen.

Jamal is angry – not at anyone in particular but at everyone: at his parents, who can’t speak Dutch; at his school, where he is always ‘that foreign kid’; and at the West, and world politics as a whole. He hits out around him. Not with his fists, but with words – because Jamal is a poet. He writes furious, menacing poetry.

Now Jamal has to talk for half an hour every afternoon, otherwise he’ll be sent home from school. So there he is, sitting with an old guy named Matthieu, who asks him question after question. The classroom is the arena where Jamal and Matthieu must do combat, where they strike out with sharp words and silent stares, where the battle will be won by poems about love and true love, by lessons from books and lessons from life, by getting to know yourself and by letting yourself know yourself.

Jamal was made to be performed in the classroom, and next season will be its third in a row touring secondary schools in the Netherlands and Belgium.
